Acne & Rosacea Treatment

Acne

Acne is a chronic inflammatory disorder, it a common problem in all skin types that can affect people in all ages and stages of their lives. It is the most common of skin complaints and affects over 90% of adolescents. Acne can have a big influence on the life of those who have it, it’s a condition from which many people lose confidence and it has a big impact on the way we feel psychologically and emotionally. It’s most common to have acne in teenage years as this is the time when our body changes and goes through puberty. Although many adults goes through it too whether it’s a young adult or over 40s.

Some of the main factors contributing to Acne:

  • Puberty

  • Stress

  • Medications

  • Poor diet

  • Poor skincare regime

  • Overuse of types of skin product

Rosacea & Acne Rosacea

Rosacea is a common inflammatory disorder that mainly affects skin on the face. It causes redness on the nose, chin, cheeks and forehead. Over time the redness can become more intense, taking on a ruddy appearance.Rosacea can also cause facial flushing which is very common, overtime the flushing causes the inflamed tissue to leak out of blood vessels and deposit in the skin the inflamed tissue cells slowly migrate to the skins surface causing a papule to form. Acne in Rosacea is a result of vascular flushing that happen around the sebaceous glands.

The condition in itself has no known affect on the physical health of person, but because of the cosmetic appearance it can lead to extreme self-consciousness.

Some of the main factors contributing to Rosacea & Acne Rosacea:

  • Poor skincare regime

  • Diet - several foods can irritate Rosacea. Alcohol, caffeine, refined sugar, milk, dairy, some fruits figs, dates, pineapple, kiwi and strawberry.

  • Tiny blood vessels under the skin may become abnormal or leaky.

  • Sun damage.

  • Climate

  • A tiny mite called Demodex Folliculorum may be involved. It lives harmlessly on the skin of many people but has been found in higher numbers in those with Rosacea.

  • Abnormal immune reactions in the skin, which lead to inflammation.

  • Genetics may also be involved as Rosacea may run in some families.

Treating Rosacea is not easy as it has a lot to do with genes and hormones, although the treatment is very effective if it’s combined with a good skin care routine with high levels of potent vitamin C – which helps to strengthen the skin, capillaries and protect the skin.

How does Skin Rich treat Acne & Rosacea conditions:

Treatment is approached in 3 distinct steps, all of which are specifically tailored to the individual client and the prevailing Acne and Rosacea skin conditions present.

Step 1 - Preparation

Initially our practitioner will invite each client to a complimentary no obligation skin consultation. At this appointment we will check the skin thoroughly with our magnifying lamp and woods lamp to see to review the prevalent skin conditions. (It is a good idea to record a food diary 2 weeks before your consultation and note any significant skin changes. This may help identify an ingested link to your skin condition.)  In addition, we will review the current skin care regime being implemented ;  If the the skin care regime is not appropriate for the skin type, the corrective skin restoration programme we prescribe will not be as effective.

During this session the practitioner will discuss the most appropriate treatment plan, duration of treatment programme and likely outcomes. Generally we find that a minimum of 3 treatments to the affected area are required, but we this is dependent on the client and severity of the skin condition. If the client is happy to proceed based on the in-depth consultation we can commence treatment on the same day in some instances. Although we may agree to employ a corrective skin regime for an initial period of up to two weeks prior to treatment. This will allow the skin to become a little more accustomed to the active ingredients as well as strengthen the skin. In this case we would book a second complimentary skin consultation after this period  where we will re-assess  to ensure that the skin is fully conditioned to receive treatment.

"By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail."

Step 2 - Treatment

Once we have properly assessed and reviewed the skin care regime we treat the visible Acne with our lasers on a setting defined to treat the prevalent acne conditions. The laser is very effective at killing bacteria in the skin, the laser setting will focus on red/dark pigment from the skin which means it will help to heal the skin as well as dry the acne quickly and reduce inflammation. Over the course of the treatments the client will experience a reduction in the frequency and severity of breakouts as we are restoring the skin back to a healthy equilibrium. In addition to the laser treatments, we provide skin peels as part of the treatment programme: skin peels offer an additional restorative function by removing toxins and impurities helping to improve skin tone and balance the complexion.

Frac 3 Laser Treatment

Frac3 is also a setting of the long pulse 1064nm Nd:YAG laser unique to Fotona. This time the 1064nnm Nd:YAG laser is set on a very short pulse duration of high power. This very short pulse duration creates a sudden, short controlled pulse of heat into the deeper layers of the skin which creates a “shockwave-like” effect. This seeks out and heats up “imperfections” in the dermis creating microscopic wounds under the skin in a fractionated way. These microscopic fractionated wounds then stimulate growth factors, new collagen production and aid the recovery of the capillary network which in turn reduces surface redness. The surface of the skin is not affected, so there is no visible recovery time, some people experience mild redness for a short period after treatment. This normally recovers in a couple of hours. It is good for “skin cleansing”, as it heats up oil in the pores, and when done repeatedly improves and tightens pores, improves acne, improves skin texture and achieves some tightening.

Step 3 - Aftercare

Once we have been able to correct the skin condition through the prescribed treatment plan, it is important that the skin care regime is continued going forward. We recommend that all clients attend an additional complimentary post-treatment assessment after completion to ensure that we have effectively treated the skin condition and that the long term management regime is effective.
