What is micro-needling?

Micro-needling, dermarolling, or skin needling, also know as Collagen induction therapy is a cosmetic procedure that involves repeatedly puncturing the skin with tiny, sterile needles. This triggers a wound response from the skin and therefore encourages new tissue growth. The purpose of treatment is to generate new collagen and skin tissue for smoother, firmer, more toned skin. Microneedling is mostly used on the face and neck and may treat various scars, wrinkles, and large pores.

How does the treatment work?
The depth of the needle used depends on the skins condition and desired outcome. For the face in clinic we use 1mm to 1.5 mm depth. This ensures full penetration of the epidermal tissue for optimum result. For home use 0.25mm or 0.5mm depth needles can be used, these aid penetration of skincare products. However  seek a professionals advise as you will be by passing your skins natural defense so a stronger reaction to active ingredients will occur.
The chosen area of skin to be treated is double cleansed then a layer of Emla (topical anesthetic cream) is applied. It works by stopping nerves from sending pain signals to your brain.  The skin is then wiped with an antiseptic solution and a fresh sterile roller opened.
The roller and hydration solution is applied to the skin and rolled with light pressure between 6-10 rolls in each direction to ensure a creation of even  micro channels. Depending on the roller depth used and desired result the skin may superficially bleed. The bleeding is temporary and an indication of a suitable end point.  A protective emollient is then applied to aid recovery and protect the surface of the skin. The treatment is performed every 6 weeks to allow full recovery time and regeneration of the treated tissue.

Aftercare
Immediately after treatment the skin will feel touch sensitive and will display a high level of erythema (redness). This can last 24 to 72 hours. On more prominent boney areas a visible indication of bleeding may remain, this may be visible for 3-5 days. The skin must be keep hydrated, and protected with recovery creams and SPF daily for 2 weeks post treatment.
